FREEMAN Y POLES

Dogs, Wolves and Coyotes

Dr. Mark Johnson of Global Wildlife Resources introduced the Y pole to the animal welfare community in 2008. It is an essential tool for difficult to manage dogs within a facility and also for wildlife professionals working with fractious canids such as wolves and coyotes. The Y pole is only effective for restraining animals which are already cornered or captured, but not yet safe enough to handle. The Y pole is a humane tool to gently control an animal. It allows practitioners to perform simple hands-on procedures such as:

  • Additional physical restraint
  • Injecting vaccinations, antibiotics, or anesthesia
  • Partial physical examinations and minor treatment of wounds
  • Made with rust-resistant thicker aluminum for extra durability

TWO Y-HEAD SIZES TO CHOOSE FROM

This original and carefully designed  Standard Y-Head is an industry standard worldwide. This design has a proven track record of many years assisting animal specialists in the field and in facilities. Provides a focused contact area for the neck and in some cases limbs. Achieve secure holds when needed.

The new Magnum-Y Head has been designed to be more versatile and capable for large canids.  What sets the new larger Y-head apart is the wider Y area makes for a more forgiving contact area for the large or oversized canid..

Another new benefit of the Magnum Y-head is that it can be used to more easily hold and gently move or direct dogs from the lower waist area. This is because a dog that is currently being restrained from the neck area, often needs to be turned/rotated or just more control given to the rear end area. This Y head makes the job much easier. Therefore is often used in conjunction with the Standard Y-head pole.

“Great design of the Y Pole. I could not believe the ease I had with restraining the coyote pups. On the sixth and seventh pup I felt like an old pro being able to guide the pole perfectly. The interesting observation was the coyotes are still small enough that they could have squeezed their heads out easily but the design of the Y Pole worked without a hitch submitting them”
