Anyone with a cat knows that cats are independent creatures. In the past few years, I’ve had to give my senior cat, Bongo, a pill on a regular basis. The vet suggested I just put the pill in his mouth but it never went off as smoothly as it did in the clinic when the vet administered the pill. When I tried the same method, I got scratched all over. It was clear to me that my cat’s compliant behaviour at the clinic was a result of him being frozen in fear and away from the safety of his hiding spots at home.
I tried hiding the crushed pill in food but my cat was all too smart for that. He would either eat around where the pill was or spit out the parts with the crushed pill.
As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. My cat had a chronic condition that required daily pills. Faced with giving him a pill every for the rest of his life, I came up with a way to give him the pill without stressing both of us out. After much trial and error, I discovered that using a 3cc syringe with some small alterations was the answer to my prayers.
This is easiest and quickest way I’ve found to give a pill to a cat that just won’t accept it crushed in food.
